Bowls Coaching

The Goolwa Bowling Club is very fortunate to have two Bowls SA. accredited Club Coaches. The Coaches are available to instruct and develop sufficient skills for all levels.

Monday mornings at 9am there are group sessions with one-on-one sessions available on request. There are club bowls available for you. Coaches will discuss your needs and desired outcomes and develop training strategies to suit. Our Club has a three-stage player development program in place with relevant drills attached.

All bowlers, both Arm bowlers and Conventional, are welcome to take part. The program will set you on a pathway towards your full potential. Session sheets are kept on record to help monitor your progress.

Some of our more accomplished players have offered to help as mentors under the control of the coaches.

The Beginning of Bowls.

Bowls historians believe that the game developed from the Egyptians. One of their pastimes was to play skittles with round stones. This has been determined by artefacts found in tombs dating back to circa 5000 BC. The sport spread across the world and took on a variety of forms – Bocce (Italian), Bolla (Saxon), Bolle (Danish), Boules (French) and Ula Miaka (Polynesian).

Club History

Goolwa Bowling Club circa 1920

The Goolwa Bowling Club was formed at a meeting held in the local council chambers on May 25th 1923. The first president was David Richie with Harold Goode as Secretary. Both men were well known identities and played a significant role in the formation and development of the club over many years.

The club started with 1 green (couch grass) of 5 rinks and was extend at a later stage by using a portion of the women’s croquet court. The club moved to its present site in 1958 after considerable voluntary work, fundraising and grants from the Recreation Ground Committee. Fred Cooper was the club’s first ground/green keeper who at the time was also the green keeper at Holdfast Bay Bowling Club.

The club house and surrounds were completed in 1958 and officially opened by Dr. Forbes who was the federal Member of Parliament at that time. Following increased membership, the second 7 rink green was discussed as well as plans for extending the clubhouse.

The alterations were approved in 1969 and all alterations were completed in 1970.The club continued to grow and in 1987 the club was successful in obtaining a grant to construct a 3rd green which was completed in 1988.

The then president of the Royal South Australian Bowling Association Ivor Wiles, had the pleasure of opening our 3rd green. The three greens have been aptly named in recognition of the untiring efforts of long serving members without whose effort many of the club facilities would not be here today. We honour them still today. Thank you again to Keith Dix, Mick Dunbar and Ern Wilhelm.

In 1990 it became apparent that the cost of maintaining grass greens was already and was further to become a financial burden to the club and the members decided review the possibility of installing synthetic greens. A first on the peninsula. It must be mentioned that the placement of the synthetic greens could not have been achieved without the support and indeed grants and loans from the District Council of Port Elliot and Goolwa.

In 2008 the kitchen was updated and the club rooms had a major expansion to accommodate a further increase of membership. 2011 saw the installation of a major solar panel system

The Club’s membership sits close to 150, with a further 160 involved in the popular Night Bowls. With a committed strategy by the club’s Board of Management, we foresee many years of solid growth ahead.
